3 Myths about Engagement Rings that Simply Aren’t True

When it comes to engagement rings, there are so many old wives’ tales and myths out there. It can be hard to separate truth from exaggeration. What do you believe and what do you toss out? Don’t worry, we’re here to help. We took a look at some of the most common engagement ring sayings. Let us clear the slate once and for all. Here are 3 myths that simply aren’t true.

1. The bigger the rock, the better.

Bigger is better, right? Sure! If we’re being honest, most of us do want a big ring. (Sigh, who wouldn’t!) But we don’t want to sacrifice quality for size. No one wants a huge honking ring that is dull and lifeless. What’s the difference between that and costume jewelry. We’d much rather take a slightly smaller ring that has a ton more sparkle and shine to it. Plus, at some point, big rings begin to look a bit ridiculous. We all can’t be celebrities. Gigantic rings can look a rather pretentious in regular day to day life circumstances. We’re much happier with a decent sized ring that has a ton of sparkle in it.

2. Diamonds only, please.

While diamonds are the most common type of engagement rings, that’s not to say they are the only choice. For those that like to stray from the conventional, the selection is endless. Sapphires, Rubies and Emeralds are just three popular precious stone choices. Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, has a Sapphire engagement ring that was passed down from Princess Diana. It’s gorgeous. If it’s good enough for Kate, it’s good enough for us. Even if we want a diamond centerstone, perhaps consider a non-diamond as sidestones.

3. The more you spend, the more he loves you.

No one says this out loud. That would just be rude. (At least we hope no one says this out loud.) But it’s something we think in the back of our sub-conscious. Society has gotten it stuck in our minds, that budget is tied to love. If no one has ever told you this flat out isn’t true, let us be the first. Three months salary or 3 days salary, it doesn’t matter. The only reflection of how much he loves you, is how much time he puts into finding the perfect ring that reflects you.
